DINGWALL SHOW

 By Lilian Scobie

This year it was held on a Sunday for the first time. I had booked the mart last year and specifically asked if we could have a Sunday show and went into the offices with confirmation but days before the event the chief auctioneer phoned to say "I never realised it was a Sunday- can you change it?" I don't often panic but this time I felt my heart pounding! I had to promise that we would keep very quite especially around Church time, and then the lady who runs the catering at the mart said to the mart men "Woe is me! I've just got a lovely new cooker and the goat club is coming in". I wondered what reputation we had, noisy and messy by the sound of it! Sharon's mum is usually in charge of the kitchen and she always leaves it cleaner than we found it. The mart men wouldn't come in to clean the pens, so the exhibitors had to do it themselves. I had serious misgivings about this show, wishing that someone else was show secretary, but they were unfounded and the show went well, we had our usual 'carry-out' on the Saturday night and then Sharon's mum once again had most of the breakfast prepared for us by the time milking had finished. A really good breakfast such as she had cooked really sets you up for the day, I hope Margaret is coming back next year and for many years to come. The cooker was a new one and was left in sparkling condition! The show was upgraded to an 'A' classification for both Females and Males. Our judge Hilary Matthew's came from Essex with a trainee judge, Richard Pemble, from Surrey. Hilary said that although it was a small show some fifty goats in all, the goats were all good quality as she enjoyed judging the show. I have since seen a report on the show and all but three of her comments were 'Very Good', and those three were 'Good' for the judging ring, class changeover and the judges accommodation. She finished her report with " Nice show - Quality Stock".

BEST FEMALE
Homacres Heatherbee

BEST MALE
Silverleas Talisker

Best in Show for the females was won by Homacres Heatherbee owned by Janet Breckin of Inch, bred by Sylvia Mearns. Reserve was Caulan Mystic bred and owned by Lilian Scobie. Janet was having a good day , she also got Best Male in Show with Silverleas Talisker bred by her self. Talisker is Heatherbee's son which is quite an achievement. Reserve Male went to Guilden Pegasus owned by Stuart & Sharon Mclean and bred by Gordon Webster & Gordon Smith. Pegasus also won Best Male and Progeny.  Best Goatling went to Merrymanse Gee owned and bred by Stuart & Sharon Mclean. I should have said that Janet was having a very good day as she won Best Female Kid with her home bred Silverleas Tantivy, one of Heatherbee's triplet kids. She went on to win best Female and Progeny with Heatherbee.

As usual the Dingwall Show was a good day in good company I would like to thank all who helped me to run the show, especially Dr Peter Barker for being Chief Steward and Don Downie as Ring Steward, there were many who helped with the weighing of the milk and the sampling. Hope to see you all again next year.
